WPML
Agencies, WooCommerce stores and business sites that need a full self-hosted translation system with workflows and broad plugin compatibility.
Manual and machine translation, language switchers, multilingual SEO and WooCommerce support: how the main WordPress translation plugins compare.
A multilingual plugin lets one WordPress site serve visitors in several languages, with each page available in translated form, a way to switch languages and URLs that search engines can index separately. Done well, it opens up new markets without running a separate site for each country.
We compare the most popular translation plugins, including WPML, Polylang, TranslatePress, Weglot, GTranslate, MultilingualPress, Linguise and ConveyThis. They take very different approaches: some store every translation in your WordPress database, others translate pages through a hosted service, and some rely mainly on machine or AI translation. Each one is checked against 27 features covering translating content, languages and URLs, multilingual SEO, compatibility and workflow.
Every feature is marked as free, paid, add-on, partial or not offered, with a note and a link to the source. The ranking combines feature coverage with popularity and ratings.
Overall score = 55% features, 20% popularity, 25% ratings. Filter by the features you need, or tick two plugins to compare them.

WPML, Polylang, TranslatePress and MultilingualPress store translations in your WordPress database, so you own them and there are no word quotas. Weglot, GTranslate's paid plans, Linguise and ConveyThis translate through their own servers and usually charge by word count or page views. Hosted tools are quicker to set up but cost more as your site grows, and translations can disappear if you stop paying.
Machine and AI translation gets you started fast, but important pages still need a human review. Check which engines are included, whether there is a monthly character allowance, and whether you can edit machine output easily in a visual or side-by-side editor.
For translated pages to rank, each language needs its own crawlable URL, translated slugs, hreflang tags and sitemap entries. JavaScript-only translation widgets do not help SEO. If you use Yoast or Rank Math, make sure titles and meta descriptions can be translated too.
Translating a shop means products, attributes, cart, checkout and emails, and often multi-currency pricing. Page builder layouts and form plugins also need to be supported, or parts of the page stay in the original language.
Compare the price for the number of languages and words you will actually have in two or three years, not just today. Switching multilingual plugin later is hard, so choose the architecture carefully.
