Decide how affiliates will refer sales
Most programmes use referral links tracked with a cookie. Coupon-based tracking credits the affiliate whenever their code is used, which works well for influencers, podcasts and offline promotion where links are not practical. Many plugins support both, but some treat coupons as an extra.
Commission rules you may need
A flat percentage is enough for many programmes. If you want different rates per product or per affiliate, tiered rates that rise with performance, recurring commissions on subscriptions, lifetime commissions or multi-level payouts, check the plan each plugin requires. These are the features most often reserved for higher tiers.
Paying affiliates
Manual payouts are fine for a handful of partners. As a programme grows, automated PayPal or Stripe payouts, bulk payout exports and store-credit payouts save a lot of admin. Check which payout methods are built in and which need an add-on.
Platform compatibility
Some plugins work with many e-commerce, membership and form plugins, while others are built for WooCommerce only. A WooCommerce-only plugin often integrates more deeply with orders, coupons and refunds; a multi-platform one suits sites that sell through several systems.
