WP Mail SMTP
Site owners who want the most guided SMTP setup and will pay for logging, alerts and backup sending.
SMTP and API mailers, Gmail and Microsoft 365 sign-in, email logs, failure alerts and backup connections: how the main WordPress email delivery plugins compare.
WordPress sends password resets, form notifications, WooCommerce order emails and more using PHP mail by default, which many hosts restrict and many inboxes treat as spam. An SMTP plugin routes those emails through a proper email service, such as Gmail, Microsoft 365, Amazon SES, SendGrid or Brevo, so they are authenticated and actually arrive.
We compare the most popular WordPress SMTP and email delivery plugins, including WP Mail SMTP, FluentSMTP, Post SMTP, Easy WP SMTP, SureMail, Site Mailer, Solid Mail and Gmail SMTP. Each one is checked against 23 features covering sending and mailers, logs and monitoring, email control, and security and admin.
Every feature is marked as free, paid, add-on, partial or not offered, with a note and a link to the source. The ranking combines feature coverage with WordPress.org popularity and ratings.
Overall score = 55% features, 20% popularity, 25% ratings. Filter by the features you need, or tick two plugins to compare them.

Statuses: Yes Pro Add-on Partial 3rd-party No ?
The plugin is only the connector; deliverability comes from the email service behind it. Choose a provider that suits your volume (a transactional service such as Amazon SES, Postmark, SendGrid, Mailgun or Brevo, or your Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 account), set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC for your domain, then make sure the plugin has a native integration for that provider.
Some plugins, such as FluentSMTP, include every mailer, logs and a backup connection for free. Others keep certain mailers (often Microsoft 365, Amazon SES or Zoho), email logs, resending or alerts in paid plans. Check the exact feature you need is in the plan you will use.
An email log lets you prove an order or form email was sent and resend it if needed. Failure alerts and a backup connection matter most for stores and membership sites, where a missed email means a support ticket or a lost sale.
Prefer OAuth sign-in for Gmail and Microsoft 365, and keep API keys in wp-config.php constants where the plugin supports it, so credentials are not exposed in the database.
The ability to stop all outgoing email is invaluable on staging sites, where you do not want real customers to receive test orders or notifications.
