Duplicator
Developers and agencies who regularly migrate, clone or deploy WordPress sites between servers.
Scheduled backups, off-site storage, one-click restores and site migration: how the main WordPress backup plugins compare.
A backup plugin is your safety net: if an update breaks the site, a hack gets through or a host fails, a recent backup stored somewhere else lets you put things back. Many backup plugins also clone and migrate sites, which makes moving to a new host or domain far less painful.
We compare the most popular backup and migration plugins, including UpdraftPlus, Duplicator, All-in-One WP Migration, BackWPup, WPvivid, BlogVault, Jetpack VaultPress Backup, Solid Backups (now Kadence Backups), Backuply and Migrate Guru. Each one is checked against 23 features covering how backups are made, where they can be stored, restore and migration tools, and day-to-day management.
Every feature is marked as free, paid, add-on, partial or not offered, with a note and a link to the source. The ranking blends feature coverage with WordPress.org popularity and ratings, so you can find a plugin that matches how often your site changes and where you want your backups kept.
Overall score = 55% features, 20% popularity, 25% ratings. Filter by the features you need, or tick two plugins to compare them.

A backup kept only on the same server disappears with it. Choose a plugin that sends backups to remote storage such as Google Drive, Dropbox, Amazon S3 or an S3-compatible service, or one that includes its own cloud storage. Some plugins keep remote destinations for paid plans or sell them as add-ons.
A brochure site may only need weekly backups. A busy WooCommerce store or membership site changes constantly, so incremental or real-time backups avoid losing orders and sign-ups between snapshots. Incremental backups also put less load on the server for large sites.
One-click restore from the dashboard is convenient, but the real test is restoring when the site will not load at all. Plugins that restore from an external dashboard or a standalone installer are more useful in an emergency. Try a restore on a staging copy before you need it.
If you move sites often, look for cloning with URL search and replace, and support for large sites. Staging sites let you test updates safely, then push changes live. Note that migration-only tools are not a substitute for scheduled backups.
Traditional plugins run backups on your own server and are usually priced per site per year or as one-off licences. Service-based tools such as BlogVault and Jetpack VaultPress Backup do the work on their own servers and include storage, but need an ongoing subscription.
