CleanTalk Spam Protection
Site owners and agencies who want invisible spam protection across every form, comment and WooCommerce page for a small annual fee.
reCAPTCHA, Cloudflare Turnstile, hCaptcha, honeypots and cloud spam filters: how the main WordPress anti-spam plugins compare.
Spam bots never sleep. Comment spam, fake registrations, junk contact form messages and automated login attempts arrive on almost every WordPress site, and on WooCommerce stores they can mean fake accounts and card-testing attacks at checkout. Anti-spam plugins stop most of it before it reaches your inbox or database, either by challenging visitors with a CAPTCHA or by quietly filtering submissions behind the scenes.
We compare the most widely used CAPTCHA and anti-spam plugins, including Akismet, CleanTalk, Antispam Bee, hCaptcha for WordPress, Simple Cloudflare Turnstile, CAPTCHA 4WP, Advanced Google reCAPTCHA, WP Armour and reCAPTCHA for WooCommerce. Each one is checked against 46 features covering protection methods, where it protects, rules and controls, privacy and performance, support for 17 popular form, community and membership plugins, and advanced protection such as bot firewalls and card-testing defence.
Every feature is marked as free, paid, add-on, partial or not offered, with a note and a link to the source. The ranking combines feature coverage with WordPress.org popularity and ratings, so you can weigh invisible cloud filtering against classic CAPTCHA challenges.
Overall score = 55% features, 20% popularity, 25% ratings. Filter by the features you need, or tick two plugins to compare them.

There are two broad approaches. CAPTCHA plugins (reCAPTCHA, Turnstile, hCaptcha) ask the browser to prove it is human, often invisibly. Filtering services such as Akismet and CleanTalk let every submission through the form and then check it against a database of known spam. Many sites combine a light challenge on login and checkout with filtering on comments and contact forms.
Comments, login and registration are covered by most plugins. Support for specific form plugins, WooCommerce checkout, page builder forms and community plugins varies a lot, so confirm every form you rely on is listed. The integrations table below shows support for Contact Form 7, WPForms, Gravity Forms, Elementor, Divi, BuddyPress, MemberPress and other popular plugins one by one.
Google reCAPTCHA sends visitor data to Google, which matters under GDPR. Cloudflare Turnstile and hCaptcha position themselves as more private, and honeypot-only plugins send nothing anywhere. Visible puzzles also cost conversions, so prefer invisible checks where they are strong enough.
Many CAPTCHA plugins are free because the CAPTCHA service itself is free. Cloud filters usually charge a yearly fee per site, and Akismet is only free for personal, non-commercial sites. Factor that in before you compare features.
Loading CAPTCHA scripts on every page slows the site down. Look for plugins that only load scripts on pages with a protected form, and keep logs short so the database does not grow.
