WP Mail SMTP
Widely used SMTP plugin from the WPForms team: 15 mailers free, with logs, alerts, backup connections and smart routing in Pro.
SMTP and API mailer plugin with free email logs, fallback SMTP, failure alerts and a mobile app; Pro adds Microsoft 365, SES and tracking.
Post SMTP began as a fork of the abandoned Postman SMTP plugin and is now developed by WPExperts. It sends WordPress email through SMTP or a provider’s API and puts a lot of monitoring into the free version, including an email log, a fallback server and failure notifications.
A three-step wizard has you pick a mailer, enter credentials and send a test email. The free plugin includes Gmail via the Gmail API (using your own Google Cloud OAuth client) and API sockets for SendGrid, Mailgun, Brevo, Postmark, SparkPost, Mailjet, Elastic Email, SMTP2GO, Resend, MailerSend, SMTP.com and others, plus a generic SMTP option. A fallback SMTP server can be configured for when the main connection fails, and a run-mode setting can log emails without delivering them.
Free users get detailed logs with resend, deliverability checks (SPF, DKIM, DMARC and spam score), a weekly summary email, and failure alerts by admin email, Slack, Pushover, the Chrome extension or the Post SMTP mobile app. Pro is sold as Basic ($59.99), Professional ($79.99) and Business ($99.99) per year. Basic adds the Pro mailers (Microsoft 365, Amazon SES, Zoho) and one-click Gmail; Professional adds automatic retries, bulk resend, batching and quota scheduling; Business adds Microsoft one-click setup, Teams alerts, mobile-app Pro features and expert setup. The report and tracking extension adds open tracking and health reports.
Who should pick it: sites that want logs, fallback sending and phone or browser alerts without paying, and agencies that would use the app or MainWP extension to watch email across many sites.
Best for: Sites that want free email logging, fallback SMTP and phone or browser failure alerts, with optional paid retries and Microsoft 365.
Post SMTP gives away more monitoring than most freemium rivals, and the mobile app is a genuinely useful extra. Its Pro tiers are reasonably priced but loosely documented, and Microsoft 365 users must pay, so it suits sites that value free logs and alerts over a polished interface.

Our estimate, see method below.
How we estimated this: WordPress.org shows 300K+ free installs, which could mean anything from 300K to 400K. The vendor says 400K+ sites, so we put the free count halfway between the middle of that range and the vendor figure, at about 380K. About 380K free installs x 4% (the usual share of free sites that also run the paid version when most features are free) gives 15K. Likely range: 7.5K to 30K. This counts sites running the paid version, including sites whose licence has lapsed. Estimates are rough and based on public figures as of 14 Oct 2026.
