WPML
Premium multilingual plugin for WordPress with a side-by-side translation editor, AI translation credits, WooCommerce support and team workflows.
Google-powered website translation for WordPress: a free on-the-fly language switcher, plus paid hosted plans that add indexable, editable translated URLs.
GTranslate translates a WordPress site into 100+ languages using Google’s machine translation. It is one of the most widely installed translation plugins on WordPress.org and works with practically any theme or plugin, because it translates the page as it is rendered rather than individual posts in the database.
The free plugin adds a language selector (floating, dropdown, flags, globe or popup styles) and translates pages on the fly in the visitor’s browser. Translated pages have no separate URLs, so they are not indexed by search engines, and the free service is restricted to non-commercial sites. Paid plans switch to GTranslate’s Translation Delivery Network, a cloud proxy that serves each language under a sub-directory (/fr/) or sub-domain (fr.example.com), stores the translations and makes them indexable.
All paid plans list unlimited words and page views, which is unusual among proxy translation services, and come with a 15-day free trial.
GTranslate is quick to set up, has no server requirements and keeps a flat price no matter how much content you have. Paid plans add hreflang tags, meta and schema translation, Yoast compatibility, WooCommerce email translation, image localisation and a usage dashboard. The trade-offs are that translations live on GTranslate’s servers rather than in your database, translated slugs and separate domains require the more expensive plans, and there is no multi-currency, glossary database or documented XLIFF exchange. Human translation is available, but as a separately quoted service.
It suits site owners who want broad, low-maintenance machine translation at a fixed annual price, and non-commercial sites that only need a free visitor-side translator.
Best for: Sites that want low-maintenance machine translation of everything on the page at a flat yearly price, regardless of content size.
GTranslate is the simplest way to put a translated version of a whole site online, and its unlimited-word paid plans are good value for large sites. The free tier is really a visitor-side translator with no SEO value, and serious multilingual SEO means the Business plan or higher, with translations living on GTranslate's servers.

Our estimate, see method below.
How we estimated this: WordPress.org shows 900K+ free installs, which could mean anything from 900K to 1M. The vendor says 1M+ sites, so we put the free count halfway between the middle of that range and the vendor figure, at about 980K. About 980K free installs x 5% (the usual share of free sites that also run the paid version when a hosted service whose free tier is generous) gives 49K. Likely range: 25K to 98K. This counts sites running the paid version, including sites whose licence has lapsed. Estimates are rough and based on public figures as of 14 Oct 2026.
