WPML
Premium multilingual plugin for WordPress with a side-by-side translation editor, AI translation credits, WooCommerce support and team workflows.
Lightweight free multilingual plugin for manual translation of posts, terms, menus and strings, with Pro and WooCommerce add-ons from WP SYNTEX.
Polylang is a free multilingual plugin from WP SYNTEX that links translated versions of posts, pages, media, categories, tags and custom post types together, so each language is real WordPress content stored in your own database. It is deliberately lightweight: it adds no extra database tables and uses WordPress taxonomies to track languages.
You create each translation yourself in the normal editor. The free plugin handles language codes in the URL, subdomains or a separate domain per language, a language switcher (including blocks for the block editor and navigation), translated menus and widgets, a String Translation screen for theme and plugin text, browser-language detection on the home page, hreflang tags and RTL languages. It also works with Yoast SEO. There is no word limit and no external service involved.
Polylang Pro adds translated URL slugs, content duplication and synchronisation between translations, deeper block editor and Site Editor support, XLIFF import and export, ACF Pro integration, and machine translation through DeepL using your own API key, including DeepL glossary selection. Version 3.8 added per-language capabilities so translators can be limited to their languages, plus WP-CLI commands. WooCommerce stores need the separate paid Polylang for WooCommerce add-on, which translates products and emails and synchronises stock; a Business Pack bundles both.
Polylang is a good fit for developers and site owners who want a clean, self-hosted multilingual setup at no cost, are happy to translate manually or with DeepL, and prefer a lean plugin over an all-in-one suite.
Best for: Site owners and developers who want a free, lean, self-hosted multilingual setup and are comfortable translating content manually or with DeepL.
Polylang is the best free option for a self-hosted multilingual site: the free plugin is generous and fast, with no word quotas. You will need Pro for translated slugs and DeepL, and the WooCommerce add-on for shops, but even both together cost less than most rivals.

Our estimate, see method below.
How we estimated this: The vendor figure (900K+) is within WordPress.org's rounding of the free installs, so it says nothing about paid sites. Website scans by WPoptic find the paid plugin (folder polylang-pro) on 990 live sites; they find the free version on 273,465 sites against about 950K WordPress.org installs, so each site found stands for about 3.5, giving 3.4K. About 950K free installs x 4% (the usual share of free sites that also run the paid version when most features are free) gives 38K. Combining these (weighted average) gives about 4.8K. Likely range: 3.1K to 7.2K. This counts sites running the paid version, including sites whose licence has lapsed. Estimates are rough and based on public figures as of 14 Oct 2026.
