TranslatePress
Visual front-end translation plugin by Cozmoslabs with AI and Google translation, self-hosted translations and paid add-ons for SEO and more languages.
Premium multilingual plugin for WordPress with a side-by-side translation editor, AI translation credits, WooCommerce support and team workflows.
WPML is a commercial multilingual plugin from OnTheGoSystems that has been developed since 2007. It turns one WordPress install into a multilingual site in which every translation is a real post, page, term or product stored in your own database, linked to its original. There is no free version on WordPress.org; you buy one of three annual plans.
The entry Multilingual Blog plan only gives you the standard translation controls, meaning you translate content yourself in the normal WordPress editor. Almost everything that makes WPML distinctive sits in Multilingual CMS and Multilingual Agency: the Advanced Translation Editor (a side-by-side editor with translation memory and a glossary), String Translation for theme and plugin text, Translation Management for translator teams, page builder and WooCommerce support, menu translation and integrations with professional translation services.
Automatic translation now runs mainly through WPML’s own Private Translation Cloud, an LLM-based engine that uses page context, a glossary and tone settings. CMS includes 22,500 AI words and Agency 45,000; after that you pay per word on a sliding pay-as-you-go scale (with 500 free words a month) or buy prepaid packs. DeepL, Google and Microsoft remain as cheaper legacy engines. The Translate Everything Automatically mode translates new and updated content as you publish, and you can review it before or after it goes live.
WPML is heavier than lightweight alternatives and adds a lot of admin screens, so the learning curve is real. The Blog plan is too limited for most business sites, so the realistic starting price is the CMS plan. AI translation beyond the included words is an ongoing cost on top of the licence.
WPML suits agencies, WooCommerce stores and content-heavy business sites that need a complete, self-hosted translation system with team workflows and wide plugin compatibility.
Best for: Agencies, WooCommerce stores and business sites that need a full self-hosted translation system with workflows and broad plugin compatibility.
WPML remains the most complete self-hosted multilingual plugin, with compatibility glue for almost every major plugin and a capable AI translation pipeline. Budget for the CMS plan rather than Blog, and factor in AI word costs if you plan to translate automatically at scale.
What WPML highlights on its own website, split by version.

Our estimate, see method below.
How we estimated this: The vendor says 1.5M+ sites use it; we take 80% of that (1.2M) because vendor counts are rounded up and include lapsed sites. Website scans by WPoptic find the paid plugin (folder sitepress-multilingual-cms) on 269,952 live sites; the scans reach roughly 38% of WordPress sites, so each site found stands for about 2.6, giving 710K. Combining these (weighted average) gives about 880K. Likely range: 570K to 1.3M. This counts sites running the paid version, including sites whose licence has lapsed. Estimates are rough and based on public figures as of 14 Oct 2026.
