WPML
Premium multilingual plugin for WordPress with a side-by-side translation editor, AI translation credits, WooCommerce support and team workflows.
Visual front-end translation plugin by Cozmoslabs with AI and Google translation, self-hosted translations and paid add-ons for SEO and more languages.
TranslatePress from Cozmoslabs lets you translate a WordPress site by clicking on text in a live front-end preview. Because it works on the rendered page, the same editor handles post content, theme and plugin strings, page builder layouts, forms, WooCommerce pages and images, and translations are stored in your own database.
The free plugin on WordPress.org includes the visual translation editor, automatic translation through Google Translate with your own API key, a small TranslatePress AI allowance of 2,000 words, gettext string translation, image translation, a menu, floating or block language switcher, hreflang tags, translation memory suggestions and a glossary for the AI engine. The main restriction is languages: free sites can add only one language besides the default.
The Personal plan unlocks unlimited languages and the SEO Pack, which translates slugs, meta titles and descriptions, social tags and alt text and adds multilingual sitemaps for Yoast, Rank Math, SEOPress, AIOSEO and others. Business adds a different domain per language, translator accounts, DeepL, automatic language detection and role-based browsing, and covers three sites. Every paid plan includes a yearly TranslatePress AI word allowance (50K, 200K or 500K words), with extra packs for sale.
Translated slugs and SEO metadata are paid features, as is translating into more than one extra language. There is no export or import of translations, no professional translation integration and no multi-currency. AI words in paid plans are capped and machine translation happens when a page is first visited.
TranslatePress suits small businesses, bloggers and stores that want an intuitive visual workflow with translations kept on their own server.
Best for: Small businesses, bloggers and WooCommerce stores that want an easy visual translation workflow with translations kept on their own server.
TranslatePress has the most approachable editor of the self-hosted options and handles page builders and WooCommerce output neatly. Most sites will need at least Personal for more languages and SEO slugs, and Business if they want language detection or translator accounts.

Our estimate, see method below.
How we estimated this: The vendor figure (400K+) is within WordPress.org's rounding of the free installs, so it says nothing about paid sites. Website scans by WPoptic find the paid plugin (folders translatepress-business, translatepress-developer) on 6,662 live sites; they find the free version on 181,753 sites against about 450K WordPress.org installs, so each site found stands for about 2.5, giving 16K. About 450K free installs x 8% (the usual share of free sites that also run the paid version when some key features are paid) gives 36K. Combining these (weighted average) gives about 18K. Likely range: 12K to 27K. This counts sites running the paid version, including sites whose licence has lapsed. Estimates are rough and based on public figures as of 14 Oct 2026.
