WPML
Premium multilingual plugin for WordPress with a side-by-side translation editor, AI translation credits, WooCommerce support and team workflows.
Premium multisite-based multilingual plugin from Syde: one site per language, translations in your own database, with DeepL, Amazon or OpenAI auto-translation.
MultilingualPress is a premium multilingual plugin developed by Syde (formerly Inpsyde). Instead of storing every language inside one site, it uses WordPress Multisite: each language is its own site in the network, and MultilingualPress links posts, pages, terms and products across those sites as translations of one another.
While editing a post you get MultilingualPress tabs for each connected language, where you can link or create the translation, copy the source content, set the translated title, slug, excerpt and taxonomies, and choose a translation provider. The AutoTranslate feature sends content to DeepL, Amazon Translate or OpenAI using your own API keys and processes it in the background, including new and updated posts, ACF fields and WooCommerce product fields in recent versions. DeepL glossaries are supported.
Because each language is a normal site, it can sit on a sub-directory, sub-domain or mapped domain, has its own media library, menus, widgets, theme language and SEO plugin settings, and keeps working as ordinary WordPress content if the plugin is removed. MultilingualPress outputs hreflang tags automatically and offers a language switcher widget, block menu, quick links, flags and a browser or geolocation redirect module.
There is no free version. Licences are per WordPress installation and differ only by number of languages: Starter (2 languages, EUR 149/yr), Professional (6, EUR 499/yr), Advanced (12, EUR 899/yr) and Enterprise (unlimited, EUR 1,499/yr), prices including VAT, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
The downsides are that you must run Multisite, there is no visual front-end editor or built-in string translation screen (theme and WooCommerce email strings use .po/.mo files or a tool like Loco Translate), no XLIFF exchange, and pricing climbs steeply with language count. Professional translation is handled through the separate translationMANAGER plugin with Eurotext.
It is best for agencies and organisations already comfortable with Multisite who want full data ownership and per-language sites.
Best for: Agencies and organisations on WordPress Multisite that want each language as its own site and full ownership of translations.
MultilingualPress is a robust choice when separate per-language sites are an advantage, such as regional teams or shops with different currencies, and it avoids the lock-in of proxy services. The Multisite requirement, missing string and visual editors and language-based pricing make it heavier than single-site plugins for small projects.
