WPForms
Beginner-friendly drag-and-drop form builder from Awesome Motive with a free Lite plugin, 2,100+ templates and tiered Pro plans for payments and CRMs.
Premium-only WordPress form builder from Rocketgenius with deep conditional logic, calculations and an official add-on library for payments and CRMs.
Gravity Forms is a commercial form plugin built by Rocketgenius, first released in 2008 and one of the longest-running premium plugins in WordPress. There is no free version on WordPress.org; every installation runs on a paid licence, and the licence tier decides which official add-ons you can download.
The core plugin is already capable. Every licence gets the drag-and-drop editor, conditional logic on fields, sections, pages and notifications, multi-page forms with progress indicators, calculated number fields, file uploads, save-and-continue links, post creation fields, a template library, entry storage with notes, and GDPR tooling that hooks into WordPress’s personal data export and erasure. Spam is handled by a honeypot, Akismet, and official reCAPTCHA and Cloudflare Turnstile add-ons. Since version 2.7, the Orbital theme gives block-editor controls for colours, input size, radius and buttons.
The main strengths are reliability and depth. Gravity Forms has a documented REST API and a very large hook surface, and a big ecosystem of third-party extensions (GravityKit, Gravity Wiz, Gravity PDF, Gravity Flow) has grown around it. That makes it a common choice for agencies building data-heavy workflows, approval processes or front-end directories.
The trade-offs are cost and missing built-ins. Many features rivals include in a free tier, such as webhooks or signatures, sit behind Elite. There is no official PDF or Google Sheets add-on, the true repeater field remains a developer-only beta, and there is no built-in prompt-based AI form generator; instead an official MCP add-on lets external AI assistants create and edit forms. The default styling is clean but less flexible than dedicated visual stylers.
Pick Gravity Forms if you build complex forms for clients, need a stable API, and value a mature add-on ecosystem more than a free entry point.
Best for: Agencies and developers building complex, integration-heavy forms who want a mature API and add-on ecosystem.
Gravity Forms remains a dependable professional choice with a strong core and a deep ecosystem. It is expensive once you need Elite-only add-ons such as webhooks or signatures, and it lacks a free tier, but for long-lived client projects its stability and extensibility are hard to fault.

Our estimate, see method below.
How we estimated this: Website scans by WPoptic find the paid plugin (folder gravityforms) on 660,346 live sites; the scans reach roughly 38% of WordPress sites, so each site found stands for about 2.6, giving 1.7M. The vendor says 5M+ sites use it, and 80% of that is 4M. Vendor totals are loose, so we only move our figure part of the way toward it, from 1.7M to 2.1M. Likely range: 1.1M to 4.2M. This counts sites running the paid version, including sites whose licence has lapsed. Estimates are rough and based on public figures as of 14 Oct 2026.
