Rank Math SEO
Modular WordPress SEO plugin with a broad free tier: redirects, 404 monitor, schema, Search Console analytics and multiple focus keywords.
Cloud-assisted SEO plugin with a live writing assistant, keyword research, audits, rank tracking and llms.txt; paid plans raise usage limits.
Squirrly SEO (now branded on WordPress.org as a GEO/AEO plugin) combines a WordPress plugin with Squirrly’s cloud service. Heavier jobs such as keyword research, audits and ranking checks run on Squirrly’s servers, while the plugin handles on-site settings. It is built around Focus Pages, a method where you pick the pages that matter most and work through a prioritised list of SEO goals for each.
With a free Squirrly account you get the Live Assistant, which checks content against multiple keywords as you write in Gutenberg, Elementor or Divi, plus limited AI keyword research, SEO goals and audits. Technical automation covers meta tags, canonical links, Open Graph and X cards, XML sitemaps (including news, video and image), JSON-LD schema with many types, local business data, robots.txt editing, bulk SEO editing, and imports from Yoast, Rank Math, AIOSEO, SEOPress, TSF and others. Newer features target AI search: llms.txt and llms-full.txt generation, AI crawler controls, IndexNow and Google Indexing API submissions, and an answer-readiness audit. Inner Links helps build internal links between related pages.
Redirect management, 404 monitoring and custom schemas live in the separate Squirrly SEO Advanced Pack plugin.
Because many features depend on Squirrly’s cloud, you need an account and an internet connection to the service, and the free tier is tightly capped (one Focus Page, five keyword researches a month). The interface is large and opinionated, which some users find overwhelming. Plans are billed monthly, and Squirrly states renewals stay at the price you signed up at.
Squirrly fits bloggers and small businesses who want step-by-step guidance and research tools inside WordPress rather than a purely technical plugin. Agencies wanting full white label or a lean footprint will find better options.
Best for: Bloggers and small businesses who want guided, research-driven SEO inside WordPress.
Squirrly packs keyword research, audits and a live writing assistant into WordPress, and its technical and AI-search features are broad. The cloud dependency, low free limits and complex interface make it less appealing for developers who just want lean technical SEO.

How we estimated this: About 35K free installs x 12% (the usual share of free sites that also run the paid version when a hosted service whose free tier is limited) gives 4.2K. Likely range: 2.1K to 8.4K. This counts sites running the paid version, including sites whose licence has lapsed. Estimates are rough and based on public figures as of 14 Oct 2026.
