Overview

Donorbox is a hosted (SaaS) fundraising platform. The WordPress plugin is a thin connector: you build campaigns in your Donorbox account and embed the form on your site with a shortcode or popup button. Payments, donor records, receipts and reporting all live on Donorbox’s servers rather than in WordPress.

How it works

Forms support preset and custom amounts, one-time or weekly to annual recurring gifts, tributes, custom fields and donor-covered fees, in multiple languages and 50+ currencies. Donors pay through Stripe (cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, ACH and regional debits such as SEPA and BACS) or PayPal and Venmo. Each gift triggers an automatic tax receipt, and donors get a branded portal to manage recurring gifts and download receipts. Campaign pages, goal meters, donor walls, peer-to-peer, events and memberships are all part of the platform.

Pricing model

There is no monthly charge on the Standard plan, but Donorbox keeps a 2.95% platform fee on donation forms and pages (3.95% on events, memberships and supporter P2P pages), on top of processing fees. Pro costs $150/month and cuts the fee to 1.75% while adding advanced form customisation, analytics, Zapier and API access and receipt rebranding. Premium is quoted by sales with a 1.6% fee. Some integrations are flat monthly add-ons on Standard.

Strengths and limitations

  • Very fast to launch, with nothing to maintain on your server and broad payment method coverage.
  • Strong built-in nonprofit features: CRM, donor portal, Gift Aid declarations, year-end receipts.
  • The percentage fee scales with your income, so a busy nonprofit can pay far more than a self-hosted plugin licence.
  • Your donor data sits in Donorbox, and the WordPress plugin itself adds little beyond embedding.

Donorbox suits organisations that want a managed platform with minimal WordPress setup and are comfortable trading a share of donations for convenience.

Best for: Nonprofits that want a hosted, fully managed donation platform embedded in WordPress with minimal setup.

Donorbox is the quickest way to get polished recurring donations, receipts and a donor portal on a WordPress site, with almost every feature available on the free-to-start plan. The trade-off is the percentage platform fee and off-site data, which grows expensive as donation volume rises.

Pros

  • No monthly cost to start; free WordPress plugin
  • Wide payment coverage: cards, wallets, ACH, SEPA, BACS, PayPal and Venmo
  • Recurring giving, tributes and fee coverage on every plan
  • Automatic tax receipts, year-end receipts and a donor portal
  • Peer-to-peer, crowdfunding, events and memberships on the same platform
  • Nothing to host or update beyond a small embed plugin

Cons

  • 2.95% platform fee on Standard (3.95% on events and memberships)
  • Pro costs $150/month to reduce the fee
  • Donor data lives on Donorbox, not in WordPress
  • Some integrations are paid monthly add-ons on Standard

Estimated Pro / paid installs ~430

Our estimate, see method below.

How we estimated this: About 8.5K free installs x 5% (the usual share of free sites that also run the paid version when a hosted service whose free tier is generous) gives 430. Likely range: 220 to 860. This counts sites running the paid version, including sites whose licence has lapsed. Estimates are rough and based on public figures as of 14 Oct 2026.
