Woo Subscriptions
Woo's official premium extension for selling recurring products, memberships and subscription boxes, with renewals, switching, retries and gifting.
Freemium WooCommerce subscription plugin by WP Swings with free trials, sign-up fees and Stripe renewals free, plus switching, gifting and retries in Pro.
Subscriptions for WooCommerce by WP Swings (formerly MakeWebBetter) is a freemium alternative to Woo Subscriptions. The free plugin has been on WordPress.org since 2021, and a Pro add-on is sold on wpswings.com in 1, 5 and 10-site licences.
Unlike many free options, the free version already covers the essentials: recurring billing on simple products with daily to yearly frequencies and expiry, free trials, sign-up fees, customer cancellation, renewal and expiry emails, a subscription box builder, a REST API and an AI health widget. Automatic renewals in the free version run through WooCommerce Stripe (cards and SEPA), Amazon Pay, Payfast and WP Swings’ own PayPal gateway, which is limited to US merchants.
There is no skip-renewal feature, and cancellation controls are limited to when a customer may cancel rather than surveys or retention offers. Migration from other subscription plugins is not documented. Several important features, including variable products and pausing, require Pro.
It is a strong pick for budget-conscious stores that want a capable free starting point and a reasonably priced upgrade path, particularly if they use other WP Swings plugins such as Wallet, Points and Rewards or Membership.
Best for: Budget-minded WooCommerce stores that want a generous free tier with a low-cost Pro upgrade for switching, gifting and retries.
WP Swings offers one of the more complete free subscription plugins, and Pro fills most remaining gaps at a fair price. It lacks skip and retention tools and has a smaller integration ecosystem than Woo Subscriptions, but it is good value for small and mid-sized stores.

Our estimate, see method below.
How we estimated this: Website scans by WPoptic find the paid plugin (folder woocommerce-subscriptions-pro) on 535 live sites; they find the free version on 5,987 sites against about 15K WordPress.org installs, so each site found stands for about 2.5, giving 1.3K. About 15K free installs x 30% (the usual share of free sites that also run the paid version when many key features are paid, and store owners upgrade more often) gives 4.5K. Combining these (weighted average) gives about 1.6K. Likely range: 1K to 2.4K. This counts sites running the paid version, including sites whose licence has lapsed. Estimates are rough and based on public figures as of 14 Oct 2026.
