Overview

Toolset is a premium suite from OnTheGoSystems, the company behind WPML. It bundles several plugins: Types registers custom post types, taxonomies and custom fields; Blocks (formerly Views) builds templates, archives and content lists in the block editor; and Forms, Access and Maps add front-end forms, role and permission control, and map displays. Every plan includes all components; plans differ only by the number of sites.

Fields and content model

Types provides field groups for posts, users and taxonomy terms, with repeatable field groups, conditional display rules and post relationships (one-to-many and many-to-many). Address fields work with the Maps component. Field data can be added to REST API responses under a toolset-meta property once the option is switched on, and Types settings can be exported and imported between sites from the Toolset Export/Import screen.

Displaying content

Toolset Blocks lets you design single-post templates, archives and custom searches visually, with a query builder that filters by fields, taxonomies and relationships. Forms creates front-end forms for adding or editing posts and users, with validation and email notifications, and there is a WooCommerce integration for custom product pages.

Things to know

  • In 2023 Toolset staff confirmed that development of new features was on hold, with work focused on bug fixes, compatibility and stability. The product is still sold, supported and lists compatibility with current WordPress releases, but it is not evolving as quickly as rivals.
  • There are no options pages, flexible-content fields or custom-table storage.
  • Integration with third-party builders is limited; Elementor’s own dynamic tags only read some post fields, so shortcodes are needed elsewhere.
  • The free Types plugin was removed from WordPress.org in 2019, so there is no free tier.

Toolset remains a reasonable choice for existing Toolset sites and for teams that want fields, relationships, templates, forms and access control from one vendor without coding. New projects may want to compare it with more actively developed options before committing.

Best for: Existing Toolset users and no-code teams that want fields, templates, forms and access rules from a single vendor.

Toolset still covers a lot of ground in one package, especially relationships, front-end forms and access control. With new feature work on hold since 2023, it is best kept for sites already built on it, while new projects should weigh it against more actively developed tools.

Pros

  • Fields, relationships, templates, forms and access control in one suite
  • Many-to-many post relationships and repeatable field groups
  • Fields for posts, users and taxonomy terms
  • Every plan includes all components
  • Front-end forms for creating and editing posts and users

Cons

  • New feature development paused since 2023; maintenance mode in practice
  • No options pages, flexible content or custom tables
  • Limited native support for Elementor and other builders
  • No free version since Types left WordPress.org in 2019
