LearnDash
Premium WordPress LMS for selling and managing courses, with drip content, quizzes, certificates, groups and native Stripe/PayPal checkout.
Free WordPress LMS by ThimPress with courses, lessons, quizzes and PayPal checkout; certificates, drip and other extras are low-cost add-ons.
LearnPress is a free LMS plugin from ThimPress with 70,000+ active installs on WordPress.org. It takes a modular approach: the core handles courses, lessons, quizzes and checkout, and a catalogue of free and paid add-ons fills in everything else, either individually or through the Pro Bundle.
The core includes a curriculum builder for sections, lessons and quizzes, lessons with text and media, and quizzes with single choice, multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank and essay questions, plus duration, retakes and passing grades. A student profile shows enrolled courses, progress and results, automated emails cover enrolment and completion, and Gutenberg blocks and templates support block themes. PayPal checkout is built in, and course import/export, online and offline course details, and AI help for thumbnails are also part of the free plugin.
Free official add-ons provide course prerequisites, reviews, wishlists, bbPress and BuddyPress integration, and a Backup & Migration tool that imports from Tutor LMS, LearnDash and MasterStudy. Paid add-ons, mostly $19–$49 each, cover certificates, assignments, gradebook, content drip, random quizzes, WooCommerce, Stripe, memberships and subscriptions, the Upsell add-on (course packages and coupons), co-instructors, commissions and myCRED points. The Pro Bundle with every premium add-on costs $299 for one site, then $209.30 per year to keep updates.
LearnPress suits budget-conscious schools and course creators who want a free core and are happy to buy only the add-ons they need, especially if they already use a ThimPress education theme.
Best for: Budget-conscious educators who want a free LMS core and to pay only for the specific add-ons they need.
LearnPress is a capable free LMS whose modular add-on model keeps costs low if you only need a few extras. Assembling a full-featured site means managing many add-ons, and group training is not covered.

Free installs from WordPress.org, the vendor's own claim, and our estimate of paid installs.
Active installations reported by WordPress.org.

Our estimate, see method below.
How we estimated this: About 75K free installs x 12% (the usual share of free sites that also run the paid version when some key features are paid, and store owners upgrade more often) gives 9K. The vendor claims 90K+ sites in total. Taking away about 75K free installs leaves 15K, and 80% of that is 12K. Vendor totals are loose, so we only move our figure part of the way toward it, from 9K to 9.8K. Likely range: 4.9K to 20K. This counts sites running the paid version, including sites whose licence has lapsed. Estimates are rough and based on public figures as of 14 Oct 2026.
