Overview

Cache Enabler is a free, lightweight page caching plugin from KeyCDN. It does one job: it generates static HTML copies of your pages, stores them on disk and serves them to visitors so WordPress does not have to rebuild every page on each request. There is no premium version and no upsell.

How it works

Cached pages are created on first visit and cleared automatically when you publish or update posts, approve comments, change terms or users, or activate plugins. You can also clear the cache from the admin bar or with WP-CLI, and set an expiry time handled by WP-Cron. Optional cache variants include a separate mobile version, a WebP version (rewriting image URLs to WebP files that another tool has already created), and pre-compressed Gzip or Brotli copies. HTML can be minified, with or without inline CSS and JavaScript. Exclusions accept post IDs and regular expressions for paths, query strings and cookies, and logged-in users are excluded by default.

For maximum speed, the documentation includes Apache and Nginx rewrite rules that let the web server deliver cached files directly without loading PHP. Multisite networks are supported with per-site cache handling, and developers get a set of hooks plus WP-CLI commands.

What it does not do

Cache Enabler intentionally leaves out front-end optimisation. It does not minify or combine CSS and JavaScript files, defer scripts, generate critical CSS, lazy-load images or manage browser-cache headers, and it has no database or Heartbeat tools. CDN URL rewriting is handled by KeyCDN’s separate free CDN Enabler plugin, and WebP files must come from an image plugin such as KeyCDN’s Optimus. The readme notes that it works well alongside Autoptimize, and Autoptimize’s FAQ in turn recommends Cache Enabler as a companion page cache.

Strengths

  • Small, fast and simple, with few settings to get wrong.
  • Free, open source and works on any host.
  • Brotli/Gzip pre-compression and WebP-aware caching.

Who should pick it: developers and site owners who want a minimal, dependable page cache and prefer to choose separate tools for CSS, JavaScript and images.

Best for: Users who want a small, reliable page cache and will pair it with separate tools for asset and image optimisation.

Cache Enabler is a clean, focused page cache that does its narrow job well and costs nothing. It is not an all-in-one speed plugin, so plan on combining it with something like Autoptimize if you need front-end optimisation.

Pros

  • Very lightweight with minimal settings
  • Gzip and Brotli pre-compressed cache files
  • WebP and mobile cache variants
  • Smart automatic cache clearing on content changes
  • Server rewrite rules can bypass PHP entirely
  • WP-CLI and multisite support

Cons

  • No CSS/JS minification, combining or deferral
  • No lazy load, critical CSS or image optimisation
  • No cache preloading or browser-cache header management
  • CDN rewriting needs the separate CDN Enabler plugin
